Neck and neck. Energy is buying , not building.

Deal and signal growth, last 30 days.

Energy +18.6%
AI / ML +18.0%

Last week: Energy +20.5%, AI +18.1%. The gap closed from 2.4 points to 0.6, and both are slowing (growth pace −16.2% energy, −14.9% AI).

Energy 286 acquisitions. Growth is led by M&A, not new builds.
AI / ML 1,459 signals, still #1 on volume, with 574 funding events
Energy · exec moves 48 CEO transitions, 128 exec moves in all
AI / ML · exec moves 63 CEO transitions, 162 exec moves in all

Everyone tracks job postings. I track the signals before them.

Energy is growing mostly through acquisitions, not new builds. Consolidation is a talent problem too: integrations bring overlapping roles, flight risk and leadership shuffles. The time to map who you keep is before the deal closes, not after.

My rule, set Oct 23: I only call energy overtaking AI after three straight monthly wins that hold after adjusting for company count and match an outside source. This week’s numbers don’t change that. Developing call, not a verdict.
